Citrix Metaframe Delivers "Spectacular" Results for Mant Glass
Mant Glass are leading supplies of glass products within the Illawarra, South Coast and southern highlands region. Expansion in the business activities had led to the establishment of a second manufacturing facility within Wollongong.
After investing heavily in the development of a custom ERP application to manage all facets of the quotation, ordering, manufacturing and billing process, staff found that the application was unusabe from the organisation second site. The application was initially designed and deployed in a client-server environment and worked as expected at the main facility. Application performance at the secondary site, however, was far from acceptable. Individual screens would take anywhere from 30 seconds to 10 minutes to load making the entire application unusable and leading to marked changes in work practices and a comensurate decrease in organisation efficiency.
From an application bandwidth study, a revised infrastructure using the existing server functionality, conversion of workstations into "terminals" and the deployment of a central Metaframe XP application server was designed and approved.
Deployment of the solution was undertaken in conjunction with the internal ERP application development team and involved a number of test stages where the ERP product functionality was tested in both client-server and application server modes to ensure that user experience at the main site was not degraded.
The results of the testing showed a marked improvement in application performance at the main site as processing was relocated from the ageing workstations to the central Metaframe server. The performance improvement at the second facility had to be seen to be believed! Application response times, previously measured in minutes were now measured in fractions of a second. Data entry tasks previously requiring 15 minutes plus peer item were now completed in less than 30 seconds.
Additionally, the application was now accessable via a secure Internet connection allowing the ERP development and system support functions access to the system from remote locations speeding deployment of system fixes and allowing regular maintenance tasks to be undertaken outside of normal business hours.
